CEREC, ceramic restoration

When restoring a tooth, you have the choice between two aesthetic materials, composite resin or ceramic restoration.

Ceramic vs. Composite Resin

To this day, ceramic remains one of the best options. Thanks to CEREC technology, ceramic strength and durability are significantly enhanced, closely matching natural enamel properties. Unlike composite resin, ceramic does not contract when cold or expand when hot, which greatly reduces postoperative sensitivity and fracture risks.

Ceramic restorations, despite being more expensive than composite resin, are more economical in the long run. In fact, since ceramic is 98% as strong as enamel, it wears down more slowly and is less likely to need replacing. Moreover, CEREC lasts on average three times longer than composite resin.

When should you choose ceramic restoration?

  • To repair a cracked or broken tooth
  • To solidify a tooth after a root canal treatment
  • To reinforce a tooth with a large amalgam (grey) or composite resin (white) filling
  • To treat tooth decay
  • To avoid a root canal treatment when not much is left of the natural tooth
