Oral cancer: Apart from your dentist, does anyone else check your mouth?

Most of the time, your dentist will be the first person to notice any problem in your mouth, as their role is to help you maintain a healthy mouth, which includes catching early signs of oral cancer.

According to the Government of Canada, oral cancer is the thirteenth most common form of cancer.

Our dentists at Soie Clinique Dentaire therefore make it a point to check for any abnormalities in the tissues of your mouth.

Oral cancer statistics

The Canadian Cancer Society forecast the following statistics for 2017:

  • 4,700 Canadians will be diagnosed with oral cancer;
  • 1,250 Canadians will die from oral cancer;
  • 3,200 men will be diagnosed with oral cancer, and 860 will die from it;
  • 1,450 women will be diagnosed with oral cancer, and 400 will die from it.

Even though people over the age of 45 have a greater risk of developing oral cancer, we screen all our patients for oral cancer, as early detection is essential to improve the chances of survival.

Risk factors

It is impossible to pinpoint the exact cause of oral cancer. However, the following are common risk factors:

  • Smoking
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Oral sex
  • Sun exposure (lips)
  • Irritation

The more frequent these are, the higher the risk becomes, so having one glass of wine a day doesn’t automatically mean you’ll develop oral cancer. However, for some people, that may be enough.

As a general rule, any oral lesion should heal within two weeks. There is therefore nothing to worry about if a lesion has not healed after only a few days.

However, if you are concerned about something in your mouth, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’ll be happy to thoroughly examine it and provide professional advice.
