Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Should wisdom teeth be extracted or not? For many patients, this can be a stressful question.

Although the answer may seem simple, it is actually a rather complex question. Several factors, such as age, dental position, health, need for orthodontic treatment and space in the mouth, must be assessed before such a recommendation is made. Because every mouth is unique, your dental surgeon will have to evaluate several criteria, in addition to analyzing your panoramic X-ray, before deciding whether you should have your wisdom teeth extracted.

If wisdom teeth extraction is suggested, it is important that you feel confident with the dental surgeon who will perform the procedure. Unless extraction is an emergency due to infection, we recommend that you meet with your dental surgeon in person to clarify the risks and benefits of keeping your wisdom teeth or having them removed. At this meeting, the dentist will explain the position of your wisdom teeth, which can be erupted, impacted or semi-impacted, and will give you personalized advice to reduce discomfort after the operation, as necessary.

At what age should wisdom teeth be extracted?

Wisdom teeth should ideally be extracted, if it is desirable, between the ages of 16 and 25. During this period, the bone is more malleable, which reduces surgical risks.

Discomforts associated with wisdom teeth:

Here are some signs and symptoms that indicate you should see your dentist to have your wisdom teeth assessed:

  • Toothache or gum pain around the last molars
  • Bad metallic or ferrous taste in your mouth
  • Swollen gums around growing teeth

If you develop a fever or seem to be having difficulty breathing, it could be a medical emergency related to a wisdom tooth infection. If the situation worsens, it could lead to hospitalization.
